EJIKEUGWU, EBIYE PETER CHIKA (Ph.D.)

Dr. Ejikeugwu, Ebiye Peter Chika is a Lecturer in the Department of Applied Microbiology, Faculty of Sciences, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Nigeria. He is currently a postdoctoral Research Fellow at our institute (Laboratory of Infectious Disease Model, Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences) here in Kyoto University, Japan. Dr. Ejikeugwu is a recipient of the 2018 Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Postdoctoral Fellowship Award. Professor AKARI Hirofumi (D.V.M; Ph.D.) is his host adviser; and they are both researching into the molecular and immunological mechanisms underlying HIV reservoir cells/tissues using macaque tropic monkeys (infected with HIV-1) as their animal model (HIV-1mt infected monkeys), with a view to better understand how latent HIV can be purged from their sanctuaries in the body of infected human hosts. The outcome of the research will give the medical community a clue on how to re-engineer current and novel antiretroviral therapy to purge HIV reservoir sites of the latent virus, and thus help to achieve a functional cure for the disease.
